Levels 1 & 2 English

If your employees do not have formal English and Maths qualifications they may need to complete them as part of their apprenticeship. Our programme develops English and Maths skills through a 12-week webinar-based programme, using an innovative, online and teacher-facilitated learning environment.

  • Gain a fully accredited Maths or English certificate at Level 1 or Level 2

Induction

As a part of your induction you will undertake a diagnostic assessment of your English with your Skills Coach. This will help us to identify your strengths and areas for development, allowing us to create a personalised learning plan just for you.

Reading

Reading: Different Types of Text

During this session you will look at a wide variety of texts, how and why they are used.

Reading: How to Summarise Information

In the second week, you will demonstrate the ability to read and summarise succinctly information or ideas from different sources.

Reading: Identifying Purpose

This week you delve deeper into the meaning of texts that you have been reading. You will identify the purpose of texts and comment on how meaning is conveyed.

Reading: Points of View and Bias

This week you will look at how advertisements and political propaganda work. You will be able to detect points of view, implicit meaning and bias with different texts.

Reading: Responding

In your final week for reading, we bring all our skills together to analyse texts in response to audience needs and consider suitable responses in preparation for the writing modules.

Writing

Writing: Purpose and Styles.

This week you will start to consider writing pieces of material in response to your potential audience. You will look at how to present information and ideas concisely, logically and persuasively, using a range of writing styles.

Writing: More styles

You will continue to develop your writing styles for different purposes, including formal letters and topical reports.

Writing: Presenting Arguments

During this session you will learn how to present information on complex subjects clearly and persuasively. You will consider how to portray your persuasive writing in real-life projects, such as crowdfunding.

Writing: Sentence Structure

Now that you have started to create some brilliant pieces of writing, we need to consider the structure of your work. This week we look at using a range of sentence structures, including complex sentences, and paragraphs to organise written communication effectively.

Writing: Punctuation, Spelling, Grammar

It’s so important that we get the detail correct in our professional and personal writing. This session focuses on how to appropriately punctuate written text including using commas, apostrophes and inverted commas accurately.

Writing: A Project

Now is the time to bring all your skills together! This lesson is a project on which learners will work in groups to read and respond to a brief, and then write a range of pieces as part of the design and promotion of a product.

1-2-1s and Exams

English: 1-2-1s and Exams

In the final week, you will have a one-to-one online with your functional skills teacher. In this session, you will gain an overview of your progress, go over any questions and brush up on any areas that need a bit more tidying up in preparation for exam readiness.
