Nigel Rothband is a speaker, consultant, coach and broadcaster who spent over 30 years running retail businesses in the U.K. His retail roles included Retail Director at Burton/Arcadia Group and Managing Director of The Body Shop with the late Dame Anita Roddick.
During a 14 year career at Burton /Arcadia Group he held various positions including Area Manager, Head of Marketing at Top Shop and General Manager of the world’s largest fashion store – Top Shop Oxford Circus. As Retail Director he was responsible for a £300m business across all Arcadia brands including Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Warehouse, Top Shop & Top Man. During his time at Arcadia Group he led and managed the ‘BrandMax’ project that streamlined and re-balanced the store portfolio. As a result of ‘BrandMax’ the Group’s profit increased by £40m, the rent bill was reduced by £88m, 800,000 square feet was removed from the estate and sales densities increased by 14%. At The Body Shop he had full P&L responsibilities for the £200m business in the U.K. running 325 company-owned and franchised stores.
More recently he has used his commercial knowledge and business acumen to support charities and social enterprises. As Chief Executive of Retail Trust for 10 years he led the team that transformed the organisation, reducing the operating deficit from £1.5m to a ‘break even’ status. An employee assistance programme was introduced that facilitated a massive increase in support for the three million employees working in or retired from the retail industry. Calls to the confidential helpline quadrupled and support rose from £160K to £1.2M.
For five years he was Chairman of The ELLA Foundation that was set up to coach, mentor and inspire charity Chief Executives. Together with his wife he recently set up his own charity to help alleviate hunger.
A keen sportsman and Manchester City supporter, he hosts the twice weekly Man City Show podcast and is regularly seen and heard on TV and radio.
